History and Heritage
In 1884, Master Cutler Karl Elsener opened a cutlery shop in Ibach, Switzerland. There, he and the cutlers’ union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks. In 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife and in 1897 with the Officer’s Knife. In 1921, after the death of his mother, Victoria, and with the advent of stainless steel, then known as “inoxydable” and used in the production of his cutlery, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born.

Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland.

Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives
The various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion.

Sharpening
To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur.

Cleaning
After you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring. To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.”

Innovation is our Tradition

Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs.

Original Swiss Army Knife Iconic Design red on craft tool table with metal

Iconic Design

In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.

This is my every day carry (EDC) knife. Like many, I like a multipurpose knife. I do not recall how many years ago I started carrying a Swiss Army, but it has been a long while. Somehow, I lost it. So I checked out many different Swiss Army knives at the local knife shop. You know the kind, in the mall with all kinds of exotic knives in the window. I decided on the Huntsman as I wanted scissors, a cork screw and a small blade. The translucent sapphire is a nice color and nice touch. This is a clear blue. You can see through it to the knife base.Price wise, Amazon was a few dollars cheaper than local stores. Add Prime and I had my Huntsman in 2 days. This is a quality knife. The blades are tight but move easily. The knife is made in Switzerland.I used the saw several times already. It is very sharp and cuts on push and pull. The knife is sharp but not razor sharp. Adequate for most jobs but I honed the edge up a notch.Bottle opener is already tested and works well.I do not know what to do with the “hook” tool. The Huntsman is just at the large end of being pocket sized. It is not uncomfortable to carry in one’s pocket but is noticeably there. Ergo, I ordered the Victorinox sheaf. This knife fits the large knife case, not the medium one.Overall, this is a high quality knife that I know will serve me well for many years.

Overall, this is a fine product. It’s a Swiss Army Multi-Tool (though everyone I know would just say “Swiss Army Knife”, and I’ll call it a “knife” just for simplicity), and has all the properties that you would expect from such a knife.I purchased this one to replace a similar model that I’ve had for many (10+) years. There was nothing unexpectedly wrong with the old one, but the blades got dull and the spring on the scissors snapped. (I think you can get replacements for the spring, but I wanted to start fresh.)I know this may be a difficult criticism for some of you to swallow, because it’s somewhat subjective:This newer knife feels flimsier. Not that it feels flimsy. Just flimsier.A bit lighter weight, too, and the action of the blades (and tools) snapping into place just doesn’t feel as solid as the older model.Like I said, a bit subjective, but also a bit disappointing. If you’re buying this knife for someone that’s never owned one before, they’ll never know the difference. And maybe this newer iteration will also withstand 10+ years of semi-regular use. But with the lower-quality feel, I’m not confident that it would. So I’d recommend this product insofar as it is what it claims to be, and is pretty decent at that. But if you’re judging the quality of this model based upon past experiences with the brand, you may be disappointed.PS – I know that some Amazon sellers sell counterfeit versions of legitimate products, and that can lead to bad reviews. I don’t think I got ripped off, because this doesn’t feel like a cheap knock off. It’s worse than an older model, sure, but it’s not bad in of itself. It still has a quality feel, however less so than Swiss Army Knives of years past.

I bought this swiss army knife last year and they’re quite good. I bought it when it was on sale for $21.00 (Victorinox rarely goes on a discounted price). The knives, mini saw & scissors are quite sharp. It’s quite a remarkable item to have in ones pocket, purse or at home. Thumbs up!

  4. Marc Ryals (verified owner)

It has all the tools I wanted and none of the ones I don’t. Plus….its beautiful. Not my first Swiss Army and not my last. I love ’em. A+

  5. RTfact (verified owner)

Victorinox still makes them well. These have changed a bit over the years, but are still amazing quality for the money. As with all mechanical things, understanding how things are intended to function, occasional cleaning and lubrication will insure longevity. The videos of Felix Immler are helpful in understanding the functionality of these tools. Use them wisely and they will last a long time.

  6. Henry Rodriguez (verified owner)

I bought this for my 13yr. old son for Christmas. He loves it. My Father did the same for me, way back when. It’s a great starter knife that he will use on a daily basis.

  7. Daisy (verified owner)

I gave this as a gift and the recipient loves it!

  8. Dennis (verified owner)

One of the best pocket knifes made in my opinion. Whats in your pocket!

  9. Doug Bleaney (verified owner)

The knife advertised showed a saw as one of the knife options but the knife I received had no saw.It was to much hassle to return the knife and, in the end, I’m pretty much satisfied with the knife overall.

Great value and product, luv it
