About Victorinox
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener’s mother, and “inox,” or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.
The various tools of a swiss army knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. With it’s unique build Swiss Army Knives require easy but particular care. Use the recommendations below to keep your knife at it’s peak functionality.

The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Every knife embodies our four cornerstones: quality, functionality, innovation and iconic design.
The Swiss Army Knife is the ultimate multi-tool. Whether you need a magnifying glass to read fine print or a metal saw to cut through iron, the Swiss Army knife has your back. In addition to a blade, these gadgets include various implements such as screwdrivers, bottle openers, and scissors.
Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs.
In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.

For a small, lightweight EDC option, consider the Victorinox Pioneer. It’s 3.5″ long, 3/8″ wide, and 7/8″ tall where the knife back protrudes.Knife: The main blade is 2.5″ long and comes sharp out of box. After a few passes on my Spyderco Sharpmaker, it’s hair-shaving sharp! The slipjoint lock is firm and holds the knife without any movement. Also, Victorinox is a familiar brand so when you whip this out in public, people are less intimidated than if you pull out a dedicated knife. For most people, a SAK screams tool whereas a knife screams “weapon”. The 2.5″ blade is perfect for my EDC needs (along with a larger tactical blade) and I find anything larger to be a little cumbersome. Can Opener: The can opener is good, but like any multitool can opener it’s much slower than a traditional crank one. Compared to the opener on other brands, I think that Victorinox is one of the best. Also, the tip doubles as a small flathead screwdriver.Awl: This is mainly why I chose the Pioneer over the Cadet. The awl is great for punching holes in fabric, leather, or thin metal. It can also be used to drill small holes in wood. It comes, surprisingly, sharp enough to slice through paper with a little effort. I think it’s a great tool.Flathead/Bottle Opener: The flathead/bottle opener is unique inits opening. It locks in place with the slipjoint lock at 180 degrees, but also at 90 degrees. This gives you an added capability in tightening screws. This piece feels very solid and I have used it successfully for medium-duty prying tasks. The bottle opener is decent when compared to dedicated bottle openers, but good in the realm of SAK style bottle openers.Alox Handles: The alox handles are thin and beautiful; much more streamlined and durable than the cheap plastic ones. there is a keyring on one end and on the back there’s a little place to inscribe your name.Carryability: If you’re thinking about throwing this on your keychain with your car keys, keep in mind that it’s fairly large. I think that it would be a little cumbersome there and a SAK Cadet may better suit you. You can add a lanyard to it and carry it floating in your pocket if you like, but personally I don’t like things floating around in my pocket. I have this on a mini survival keychain along with a Fenix E01, a firesteel, and a pill tube with iodine tabs. Since it sits in a pouch on my canteen, carryability is not an issue. Previously I had this riding in the little coin pocket on my jeans and my shorts, and it fit perfectly there without any movement.Bottom Line: Although I use this on a mini survival keychain, I’d recommend as an EDC option as well. It has a great variety of tools that provide with you with a lot of capabilities. For $25, this is a great deal; I’d buy one again without any second thoughts.

The blade is a touch thicker than on your average SAK, which makes it that much better. No toothpick or tweezers, and that’s fine… this one has everything you need and nothing you don’t. I’ve seen lots of Victorinox over the years and I don’t ever remember seeing a manufacturing defect. This one is well worth the cost.

Been a Victorinox SAK user for most of my life. Got my first knife at age 6 and they are excellent. This model is the best yet. Alox handle scales instead of red plastic make it even better. Love the fact that instead of 2 blades it had a blade and an awl.Quality materials, solid construction as well as perfect fit and finish.Differences between this Pioneer model and the Standard Driver/Cadet model subtle but well executed and practical. Love the bottle opener/large flat head screwdriver/wire stripper that locks opens in both 90* or full open positions.Key ring is bigger and more substantial than older versions. All in all the best bang for the buck with regards to the various SAK by Victorinox.Great price and quick shipping, so what are you waiting for, pick one up!

The Pioneer has quality that can’t be fully appreciated until you have one in hand. Highly recommended for everyday use. Order a pocket clip so it hangs vertically in your pocket and you won’t feel it annoying you while you walk or work.

Been using this for a few months. Knife is perfect for edc and quality is as expected for Victorinox .money well spent.knife is very well built and held up to everything ive used it for (from cutting up fruit to ising the awl to open holes up in 1/16″ sheet metal) blade holds a decent edge that lasts and the alox handles are a definate upgrade to the usual plastic scaled handles. Perfect thickness to comfortably use and carry everyday. If you dont have one i would strongly recommend purchasing one

Much lighter than I expected. Nice design and sleek finish — the alox exterior is a nice touch. It was a tough debate between the Victorinox Cadet, Farmer or Pioneer (I wanted a swiss army knife with a key ring), but I wanted to keep the tools limited to things I’d actually use on a regular basis (I live in the city), and the Pioneer won out. No regrets. Would buy as a gift for a friend.

This is the knife that Victorinox has been producing for (well) over a Hundred Years. And it shows. The tools snick in and out just a little bit better. The springs are just a little bit stiffer. The whole of it is just a little bit sturdier. There are no scale tools, or scissors, or cork screws.Sometimes the tool layout on some Swiss Army knives can be a little awkward, or may have some problems running in and out: not so here. This particular design dates back to 1957. It’s been updated and improved, or not – depending on what you like or dislike about it, over the years, but it goes right back to the beginning as far as its essentials are concerned. The only thing I don’t like about it is the implementation of the key ring/lanyard attachment. I find it sticks my hand in an uncomfortable way. Some people hate that it has a key ring at all, and, indeed, there are examples around without one. Personally, I feel that a lanyard attachment point is a good thing, bu

I’ve never been impressed with SAK’s. The blades are thin and the plastic scales make it feel like a toy. The tools were certainly never robust enough for any serious tasks. I’ve carried Buck, Leatherman and Kershaw products for the last 40+ years.I recently purchased this SAK with ALOX scales and have been very pleased with its overall performance and quality. The tools, although limited to a basic selection, are of heavier construction than non-ALOX knives, and are suitable for moderate tasks. It’s not too big/heavy and is slim enough to ride in your pocket comfortably all day.I especially appreciate that it comes with a key-chain attachment. I have chosen to suspend it on a carabineer from my belt loop, instead of just dropping it into my pants pocket. In this way, it can’t fall out of my pocket, and the weight of the knife is supported by the belt loop as opposed to sitting at the bottom of my pocket sideways like a lump.

I have received the Victorinox Pioneer knife with bad anodizing twice. The first one was worse than the replacement (pictured), but the replacement isn’t much better. The knife works fine, but I have never received a Victorinox knife that had finishing defects like the two Pioneer knives that I received. After looking into it, I learned that this is a common with the Pioneer Alox series, but I did not know that before. The two copies that I received are likely factory seconds, and should have been offered through the Amazon warehouse. I don’t see an option to return the replacement, so I guess I’m stuck with a knife with rough scales. Because of this experience, I cannot recommend the Victorinox Pionee. It’s a shame, because the Pioneer offers a very useful toolset, and usually Victorinox knives come with a great fit and finish.

I’ve been carrying this model pocket knife everyday for years.I’ve never broken one but I do seem to loose one annually. When that happens I look around for other knife options but nothing comes close. It’s light and thin enough to carry everyday and has just the right implements for my needs. There are certainly other knifes with more blades but they’re fat and heavy.I was lucky this time around – this was on sale so I bought two!
