They seem high quality for the price, very vibrant colors. It’s a good size for travel but will probably last a while, with a nice selection of colors.

I am so blown away by these paints! I’m a long time artist, but a relatively new watercolorist. I bought these as a “guilt free” set tolearn new techniques, traveling, and sketchbook work instead of using my expensive paints. The paints were all nicely wrapped, I will say they were a bit hard to get out of the palette fully wrapped, but once you get them started they were much easier. The wraps had the names, and all of the pigment information you would expect to have on better quality paints. I really appreciated that the color numbers were printed on the pans too, so no need to label them for reference in the future. These colors just melt when you touch your brush to them, they are an absolute dream and need no pre-wetting is needed. They are pigmented, bright, translucent, easy to mix, and an all around amazing set to work with. I’m also enjoying the flow of these paints with wet-on-wet techniques. The paint flows so beautifully, and dries without any

I think Van Gogh watercolors are terrific and this half pan set has more than enough bright vibrant colors to cover most subjects. I contacted the company and I asked if they see these colors as student or professional grade – the said “neither.” They said they consider Van Gogh watercolors “Artist” grade – meaning they have fewer color options available than professional paints (now 40 but soon to be more) but the paints themselves are higher quality than “Student” grade. I agree. All Van Gogh colors are archival – lasting over 100 years. They are also easily hydrated so they quickly give you plenty of rich vibrant color to play with. The colors mix easily and the addition of a brush and tipping off sponge makes this watercolor set a pleasure for any artist in the studio and in the field. My only minor complaint is… you need to unwrap the 24 paper wrapped half pans and if you don’t open the box carefully, you’ll be picking the half pans up off

Overall I was extremely impressed with these paints and the box they came in. It was a custom molded plastic box unlike any other set I own, with a high quality travel brush and removable palette tray. The colors show up very nicely over darker colors or black paper, though could be mixed with any color of paint to create a shimmer version of that color. The price is comparable to others on the market, but this case and brush does set them apart. I love that Van Gogh paints by Royal Talens have always proven to be very high quality and lightfast. The paint was easily mixed with water and applied with a brush to the tip of my dip-pen nib for calligraphy. The paint flowed effortlessly, allowing for fine details and writing lines, in addition to being a pleasure to paint with. The 12 colors include silver, light gold, bronze, graphite, deep gold, copper and interference blue, yellow, violet, white and red. Unlike the metallic colors which are pretty opaque, the inte

I had a few Van Gogh watercolor tubes before buying this set so i expected nothing short of perfection and I was not disappointed. The colors are very clean, very bright, very transparent, mix well. I uploaded a picture of the napkin I used to clean my water brush as I swatched them to demonstrate just how cleanly they all mix! The metal tin is exceptional. The mixing trays lay parallel to the surface, so your paint won’t drop out of the little wells on the bottom mixing tray. It does have sharp, raw edges in places, so use caution. The pans are individually stamped with their number for easy identification. Fits well in the outer pocket of my backpack. The brush it comes with is a lovely, juicy synthetic that comes to a very sharp point when went.My only complaint is the presence of white and black, which i replaced with perylene maroon and oxide of chromium.

I am not professional artist , but addicted to watercolor. It is embarassing that I own more than 50 palettes( artist, student, and craft grade) so far. I enjoy this set very much. I believe Van Gogh is the best among the other student grade watercolor paints. They are very pigmented, easily re-wet, and lightfast. This set includes their newly released colors (dusk & interference) and I like them very much.

Im an experienced watercolorist. I studied art in college, but after years of not painting, I picked it up again. I have tried a large variety of paints from cheap to expensive, from liquid to pans to tubes etc. So far these paints are my favorite.I’ll admit that I stayed away from them because the name is a bit cheesy and I felt like they may be poor quality. I mean who buys paints names after a ridiculously famous artist? It’s like buying a frozen entree named after your favorite chef. You know it’s not going to compare to the real thing.Anyways, after reawakening my love for watercolor I started off with some paints and was not getting good results. I honestly thought it was because I was so out of practice. But I just wasn’t happy with my pieces. The colors seemed too fake, too bright and I couldn’t get a lot of texture and detail. I was having a lot of trouble manipulating the color so I decided to change my paints.I went through 6 other brands of paints and none gave me the results I was looking for until I tried these. To me, the most important thing about WC paints are three things. Transparency, workability (I’ll get more into that later), and color tones.Transparency is a given. Chalky watercolor is just the worst. You’ll never get good results if you cannot easily layer your colors.Workability: now this is where things get tricky. I really like the ability to be able to lift my color off the paper if it does something I don’t like, or to create highlights. I also like the ability for colors to bleed a bit and form natural textures as that’s what makes watercolor unique as a medium. This paint does just that. You can always go back in and rework areas etc. I will warn that the reds do tend to bleed more than the other shades so keep that in mind. Some people don’t like this. Some prefer for the paint to stay put where they left it and like to be able to do washes right over painted areas. With the van gohs, this is difficult. As the paint will react to any moisture it’s introduced to, even once dry. But I like that you can rework areas multiple times. If you like something more stable, try the Windsor newtons. They tend to stay put more; or you can try India inks which are waterproof once dry.The last thing is color shades. I like natural looking colors. Shades that are too bright or almost fluorescent are very off putting to me as your work can end up looking like it was done with crayolas. The shades in this set are great. They are bright, don’t get me wrong, but they are natural looking. The only flaw with this set is a lack of a true violet shade and a good magenta. I do a lot of florals and find that you can’t mix a good purple with the red and blues provided in this set. Nor can you get a good magenta. So you may need to buy a couple of extra tubes in those shades. Other than that, these paints are excellent. Very good quality, fantastic workability and gorgeous, true-to-life colors.

This is lovely paint. The metallics are bold and cover well. The shine is noted even when laying flat. The interesting thing about the interference colors are the shift in color viewed from flat to tilted. Please notice the photos showing the complement tone of each interference color. These colors are apparent when not under direct light or tilted. This was a surprise to see a blue swatch looking peach till I tilted it. As I swatched more, each color was the complement. This may or may not be a concern as you use these paints. It does affect the way I plan to use these and them glad I did a swatch before taking brush to finished card.Since I am going to use these as a highlight over top of colored pencil you don’t see the shift when applied over the small pencil swatches. I am pleased with the coverage over the oil/ wax based pencils.I did not think to try them over regular watercolor or as a mix. I will test and update the next time I have my paints out.

This is such a great product for a beginner. It’s met all my needs and then some. Even though it’s small (see pic vs a standard pill bottle) It’s lasted a long time. Great little gift paired with these synthetic sable travel brushes:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M3VMDED/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a few Van Gogh palettes and I love their paints so much – even as much as more expensive brands. Still, I hesitated with buying the metallic palette since I had other metallic palettes that were cheaper and had more colors and this palette cost quite a bit more than similarly sized Van Gogh palettes. After quite a bit of research, I decided to give it a try. I’m so glad I did! it’s absolutely delightful and sparks immense joy. The quality is impressive and the colors pack a punch – especially on black paper (I’m using the Van Gogh and Stonehenge black watercolor papers and I enjoy both). They rewet super quickly and are a delight to work with. They’re pigmented and creamy/dreamy. I hope Van Gogh expands its metallic range. I love these just as much as my Finetec and Coliro palettes and the quality is exceptional like all other Van Gogh items I’ve purchased. The portability and vibrancy makes it a wonderful palette to have and take with me.
