Description

Inspired by Time’s Speciale 12, the Speciale 8 is a slightly more compact version of its big sister. Constructed with aluminum, this pedal uses 4 adjustable spikes for great grip, even when not clipped in. It features Time’s patented ATAC engagement system for easy insertion, predictable release, and it even self cleans. Designed for the most demanding riders and conditions, the Speciale 8 is a great upgrade for your bike.

I have been using Time pedals for the past 18 years, mostly the XC versions. In recent years I have been unhappy with the durability of my XC 8,6, and 12 pedals and have broken 3 pair from rock strikes. I ride mostly trail bikes which tend to get a lot more rock strikes than my XC bikes with higher bottom brackets.I have been using the MX8 models for the past year or so, durability wise they are bomb proof, but the large platform area results in allot of rock strikes on my trail/enduro style bikes. The special 8’s certainly result in less strikes but have the platform which should offer solid protection to the pedal body.Special 8’s are an awesome pedal, less rock strikes, should hold up but then again I only have about 120 miles on them so far.I am a serious rider 4000 mountain miles per year and on a racing team, Solid buy if you are not a weight weenie, Times clear mud and snow WAY better than SPD style pedals. Don’t bother with the crank bros they don’t hol

I’ve been mtbing (XC & Enduro) with Time pedals for over 20 years. First with 2 pairs of XS (grey & very reliable) next the XS 12 carbon (black& red, very poorly R&D/ engineered) then back to the XS.These Speciale pedals are a solid metal construction with a small platform (relative to flats) that include 4x mini threaded pins that you insert into the pedal for possible adhesion with soft rubber soles. You might be able to see in the photos my Specialized Tahoe shoes don’t get anywhere near these pins. I’m hoping the pins will protect the pedal from rock strike/ impacts. They have a solid click to let you know when your shoe & cleat are locked in. A new pair of shoe cleats are included with the pedals. If you have made it this far then you probably already know about the “float” on Time pedals that are great for those with knee issues like me. My initial impressions, supported by professional reviews, is these pedals are a good step up for those that appreciate that float & need a light, strong & durable pedal with a usable platform.

UPDATE: Amazon prime got me a new set of petals in less than two days and correct spindle threads this time!Love these pedals for the short time I got to ride em 3 miles… excited to get back on clipless… buuuut, I messed up and didn’t check the spindle threads left/right… I thought my left crank was stripped and never thought to check for 2 right thread spindles… my pedals were both right threaded like a previous review… Suprisingly I got it it incorrectly with ease lol, but damaged my crank..good thing for prime… they are sending a replacement right away… check the threads if it doesn’t thread on easily…..before you gotta spend $$50 to have your crank Hilo threaded to fix it like I did…

I have been a Time ATAC pedal user for more than 10 years, so I assumed that when I mounted these on my bike, the ATAC pedals on my shoes from the previous pedals would work for these. You have to use the pedals that come with the pedals, or a newer model, to retain the function of the newer pedals….

Have taken a beating, im >200 lbs and have hit plenty of rocks and they have continued to work as they should.Have ridden crankbros mallets in the past, these are a little tighter but have a similar design. Feet dont accidentally come unclipped really at all but havent gotten too hungup crashing, or nearly crashing.

I spent many years riding Time pedals, through successive generations. I won’t ride them again.Five reasons:1. They have a nasty tendency to fail to release 5-10% of the time, resulting in damage to bike/you.2. You can’t clip in quickly – if you dismount in a technical section (or technical and uphill) your only option is hike-a-bike, even if you have a strong trackstand. You often spend 5-10 feet sketchily trying to get your second foot locked in.3. The supposed “float” advantage for your knees is false. Shimano pedals have a similar amount of play, without the loose side-to-slide slide of Time pedals (which also changes the ease of release depending on position, making them even more sketchy).4. They have a very nasty tendency to clip on things (rocks, roots). Over-and-over I found myself jarred, and almost crashed repeatedly.5. Their design is flawed, and pedal strikes on the bottom will eject your foot from the pedal. On the bright side, they are durable; they shrug off repeated rock strikes. Although they look gashed and ugly.As context, I “upgraded” to the Speciale 8 from the Time Atac Carbon. My carbons caused many falls, due to inconsistent ability to unclip. I chalked it up to some wear on the springs, and “upgraded.” Unclipping was somewhat more reliable — but NOT reliable. Clipping in was very difficult, despite using the adjustor springs. The Shimano XT pedals, on the other hand, are everything these pedals wish they could be:1. Easy to clip in.2. Easy to unclip (when adjusted correctly).3. Good amount of float, and very easy on the knees.4. SIGNIFICANTLY reduced pedal strikes – and the ones that occur aren’t jarring or catastrophicI was loyal to Time pedals for years. The “reviews” said Time pedals were on-par with the other top pedals. I must respectfully disagree, after many hundreds of miles on them (and the competition).

I have had them on my MTB for about two weeks now. Happy with the pre set tension and float and they clear mud well.

These pedals are excellent for MTB BMX or Cyclocross. I have a pair on my MTB and a pair on my cross / gravel bikes. Easy entry in the muddy and wet conditions, and you don’t slip out randomly… no problem. I would recommend to anyone on any bicycle situation you encounter!!!

Been riding Time for 20+ years and still have original 1999 version attack on a hard tail. Have different versions on 4 different bikes. Love the amount of float and love consistency and build. The 8 can take tons of AM abuse and my orange pair are basically silver now. I once broke a spindle of another brand thinking I should go lighter on peddles to save some weight but learned. Special 8 is not light but good weight for my riding style.
