I got the feel for this planer tool on an old set of “garage” skis that don’t get used any more. I would not take this tool out of the box and start working on your favorite boards (or new ones) without first doing some test cuts on an old pair. The adjustment system works very well and allows for a very precise cut. I can remove material exactly where I need to without having to hog out the entire sidewall. The catch is you must adjust for both height and depth to ensure the amount of “bite” is correct. Do this and you can achieve great results. I found that on most skis I would have to adjust the planer for cutting the tips, then re-adjust for the waist, and then adjust again for the tails. Properly adjusted this tool does not chatter. It’s made well and the round cutting disc is a little more forgiving than the square or triangle cutting edges I’ve used in the past.

First time using a sidewall cutter and it took about 60 seconds to learn how to do it. Simply put yourself in a position where you can see the blade on the sidewall, make an initial adjustment. After that you have to make small adjustments so you only shave off what you don’t want as the angle of the ski changes. You need a bright light to see your work. But its easy and gives great results.

I was nervous to get one of these after being told how hard they are to use, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. If you can handle using a scraper sharpener then you won’t have any trouble making the smooth steady motions this requires. Just err on the side of not taking enough away to begin with, you can always make another pass. It works so much better than the old panzer file I used to use. Swix recommends this round blade for cap skis, and their other tool that also has a square blade for sidewall skis. However some people online said they prefer this one for sidewall skis as well. I haven’t used the square blade, but I have used this round blade on three pairs of sidewall skis and it worked just fine on all of them.

I’m conflicted on how to rate this. I could have easily rated this 4 stars, because you can’t really expect much from a $35 tool in a plastic housing. On the other hand, that’s exactly what you get in my experience – a mediocre tool.I suppose the key question is, what would someone on a budget purchase? The Beast is basically a 7 degree edge guide for a panzer file. Just a panzer file? Maybe …I find it difficult to set the cutting depth accurately. I ended up giving it away and getting the much more expensive SVST World Cup sidewall planer, after considering both the SVST and the FKS/Kunzman planer (also a highly regarded planer).Personally, I’m thrilled with the SVST, but I’m a tool junkie.Others would differ in their opinion, and there’s a lively discussion on the topic over here: http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php/214113-sidewall-planers-any-good-ones

I had a read a review else ware on a number of sidewall planners and this one came up as the most economical and easiest to use. I found this a great tool and once you get the hang of using it this side planner does a great job. Tip, on the product card instructions you should show that the tool is running on the Base side of the ski and on top of the edge. Adjust the cutting tool so that it just cuts the sidewall bevel against the metal edge of the ski and not cutting the edge. It can cut the edge and that is not desirable. I marked with a Black magic marker which way CW or CCW to turn the screws for the correct direction of the cutting wheel and cutting depth as will as which direction the tool should be pushed along the ski. Makes a nice little spiral twisted plastic waste stream which is easy to clean up rather than leaving a lot of small pieces of plastic to clean up. I highly recommend this tool. I am an experienced ski tuner in sharping and polishing edg

great quality. takes some getting used to. easy to adjust and works great. sharp and leaves a clean cut. essential for tuning skis at home. if you were in a commercial environment I would upgrade but for a DIY home with a few pairs this is perfect.

If your tired of having to clean the edge plastic out of your file, this is a must. Super easy to use and set up for each ski.

Works great. First time I’ve used something like this, so I can’t compare it to anything. I practiced on some cheap skis first. First go wasn’t pretty, but thereafter it worked fine.

Pro- able to set blade depth and how close to ski’s metal edge- simple enough to make multiple passes. I find it best to start further away from edge and with less depth, then work deeper and toward the edge bit by bit.Con- somewhat difficult to see where the blade will make contact with the sidewall, or (bad) metal edge.- tends to catch on topsheet at tip & tail, so extra care is needed at both ends.
