Description

The Starrett S565PC is an eight-piece steel drive pin punch set that is used to drive pins into or out of a workpiece. The set includes pin punches with the following diameters: 1/16″, 3/32″, 1/8″, 5/32″, 3/16″, 7/32″, 1/4″, and 5/16″. Each pin punch is made from hardened, tempered steel and has a knurled finger grip. Each measures 4” in length and has its diameter stamped on the head. The set comes in a protective vinyl case with labeled pockets for organization. Pin punches are used to place or knock out pins and rivets in workpieces, where they are frequently used to attach a part to a rotating shaft. They have a cylindrical body to hold and drive the smaller diameter, flat-ended tip into the workpiece.

Please don’t laugh (I’m new, but learning fast), but I had never heard of Starrett until last year when I ran across a reference in a product review on another website (something like, “It’s no Starrett.”). After researching further and not finding one negative comment about Starrett, I decided to invest the extra money in this punch set. No regrets, baby! This is a super high quality set. Nice and solid, with some weight to it. Knurled handles for easy gripping. If you want a cheap no-name (probably Chinese) punch set from someplace like CheaperThanDirt for $10, then fine, more power to you; but as someone having just come from that and ending up frustrated & angry because the dang things bend and break in two when trying to remove a simple pin from a firearm–not to mention scratching the finish when it does–my advice is to save your money, bide your time, and invest wisely in something that’ll last a lifetime and do the job. This Starrett set is just the ticket.Update (2/7/14):I love this set, and it still gets my highest 5-star recommendation. However, the 1/16″ punch has bent/broke on a couple of occasions and required replacement. If I remember correctly, I believe the two culprits were (1) the safety lever pins on the Beretta 92/96 and (2) the sear pin on a Taurus M66 revolver. In both cases, the pins were in very tight (the Taurus pin is staked) and required a good whack to loosen. In any case, it was a minor setback, and no harm done. I now keep spares of the 1/16″ punch on hand in case something like this ever happens again. [Ironically, I haven’t had a problem since I ordered spares!] This is a great punch set!

Got this as a replacement for one that I bought in the 90s and finally mangled enough to merit a new one. Still made in the US, still great quality steel and tempering. I do wish they offered these smaller punches in a longer length, but you can get that from Gedore if need be (also excellent punches). I never bothered to measure my old one, but in response to a sizing question here, this 2021 punch does in fact measure 1.5mm at the tip (actually about 1.516mm) rather than 1/16″. It is correctly and slightly relieved for the remainder of it’s length. The usable pin length is indeed 9/16″ – if you need more and still want a high quality punch, the length on the Gedore 1.5mm is 30mm (just over twice the length) and those are much better than the majority of long punches sold with the possible exception of Mayhew Pro series (but no roll pin nib on the Gedore). The Tekton is decent, still US made, but length is in between as is quality. These punches are comparatively delicate (all of them in these small sizes) so if you have particularly tight fitting pins or if they’re frozen or rusted, best to get them started with a drop of penetrant and a center punch and then use this one to follow through. Like broken taps and drill bits, if a punch breaks it’s usually operator error or bad luck, but if you truly get a defective one that shatters, Starrett should take care of you if you ask (although you will probably find it more cost effective to just buy a new one instead).

Used to replace the front sight on a Taurus 856 revolver. The 1/16” pin punch easily removed the roll pin with just a few strokes using a Real Avid hammer that was also purchased on Amazon. The punch still looks like it’s new. Starrett makes quality punches that last!

It’s a punch, little smaller than I need though

Like all Starrett Tools, this is as good as is available in the world.

    Nothing like a quality tool!

As always a sturdy quality made tool.

After bending several cheap punches, finally I have a good one. This punch works great.
