I bought this pen as sort of a backup to my fountain pens and to match my Rotring 800 0.7mm pencil. Unfortunately, soon after receiving it, I was quickly reminded why I’ve never gotten attached to any ballpoint pens. The particular Rotring 800 pen that I received had a really bad refill that was hard to start even after only a few hours of non-use and when it’s writing, it was faint and skipped constantly. I don’t know if that’s typical for the Rotring refill or if mine has just sat too long in the warehouse but it really soured my experience with this pen. A Cross ballpoint pen that I’m currently using has a much smoother writing experience even though it is still on the same refill cartridge that originally came with the pen when I bought it all the way back in 2004. I understand that I could research and buy better refills for the 800, but frankly, I don’t want to have to do that and pay $5 for a refill for a $60 pen body when I can get a Pilot G2 that writes

Not to brag, or anything, but I feel like I’ve had a lot of cool pens in my life. They may not have been expensive vintage this-or-that, but they felt great, they wrote great, and when the cartridges ran out I replaced them eagerly. I watched the enamel chip away, they lost their heft, I used pens less and less…But I’m buying pens again, to start a new generation, and this is a cool new addition. I love the colours, it’s small and light, but not too light – it has the right amount of weight to it for such a narrow pen – and the telescoping tip thing is just too cool. Sure, it’ll take some time to get used to the twist action of releasing the tip, but sometimes we just need to re-learn our actions.

Let’s start off to say I only purchase rotring pens. I now hate using any other pen then my rotrings. I’ve purchased around 400$ worth of rotring pens and pencils and the only one I haven’t gotten is the quick pro. I usually loose all my pens I ever buy but I haven’t lost one of my rotrings. Just shows how much I love these pens and pencils. BEFORE YOU purchase the 800 pen I honestly recommend the 600 pen because I’m not a fan of the twist. To me personally the click feels much more superior. And honestly the gold accents don’t look that nice in person. BUT for the mechanical pencils it’s definitely ideal to get the 800 because the twist mechanism will protect the pointy metal part that the lead comes out of. On the 600 mechanical pencil the thin metal part for the lead is always vulnerable and can be bent or broken off. So in my opinion from someone who owns almost every option and color they offer I love the 600 pens more than the 800 pens but I

I enjoy the quality of this pen. All metal, retractable head, and ergonomic design. I replaced the ball point with a pilot roller ball. Unnecessary, but I favor Rollerblade. Worth a look.

Looks great, easy to control, and it makes my handwriting more fluid.

I bought the pen due to having previously purchasing the 800+ pencil. The pen writes really well. I upgraded the pen refill with a parker refill kit, and this alleviates any problems with this pen. I cannot think of any problems, annoyances, or issues with this pen besides the price 🙂

I love the weight, the twist action, and that I can refill it. Rotring has been one of my favorite companies for a long time. I probably won’t ever have to buy another ball point pen again because of the great design and metal parts.

I love the mechanism to have ink come out and go back in. A definite recommend!

i am a lifelong parker jotter carrier. decided to expand my horizons. wanted the otring 600 but the 800 is much less expensive. first thoughts. okay, the shape will grow on me. it looks attractive. second thoughts. turn the dial and the pen extends in my opinion way too far out. wobbles when i try to write, so can’t get a cohesive line out of it. when you turn the dial it feels cheap, but i have not opened it up to look at it. mostly out of fear it will not work again. i suspect this will not survive being dropped due to the sounds it makes when i open it. yet i still like it. will try the 600.
