I have been using an ATC for climb belay for years but this is a huge step up. If the belayer is not paying close attention it still works. Almost a full auto belay. Big improvement for me.

This is way better for me than the grigri2 with the “anti-panic” feature. I used my buddies grigri2 before I bought this. As soon as I would lower him at a decent rate the grigri2 would lock up. I’m much happier with the original.

I use it with 9.8 and 9.4 mm ropes. Grabs great. It takes more energy when belaying a lead climber to get the rope out fast enough. My touch on lowering someone with it is a little suspect as well sometimes, but it delivers so much peace of mind when one of my kids is belaying someone that they won’t freeze up etc. So overall, totally worth it. Seems to be good quality build.

Just get it. I know it’s $100 just get it, nothing really much to say.Okay maybe you don’t need to get it if you’re just climbing in the gym, who are all somehow outfitting every rope with one of these. Now I see where my membership costs are going.

I love the Grigri WITH sterling ropes. I had problems with a Mammut 9.5mm rope not feeding quickly enough for lead-belaying. I’ve been using it for 3 years. The grigri gives a lot of peace of mind over a standard ATC. If you buy this, go on youtube and find instructional videos, and then practice the correct form for belaying and feeding the rope quickly. Use good belay techniques. Once you get it down, it’a breeze and much safer than other belay methods. I also recommend learning to belay first on a standard ATC, as it will teach you good belay skills – like the importance of never releasing the break-end of the rope before you swtich to Grigri. Just my 2 cents. Strongly recommended.

It functions perfectly but the “red” color is definitely more orange than red. Perhaps “burnt orange” would be a better color name.

I’m usually against buying climbing equipment from non climbing retailers ie Amazon but I couldn’t pass this deal. Bought this when it was $45 off msrp and was not disappointed. Took 3 weeks to get here but I was told 4. Came in great condition, would have preferred for it to be protected in the packaging but nothing was damaged. Works just as expected
