Care of StylusWith proper care we find that up to 1,000 hours is possible without degradation of performance. The stylus does begin to exhibit changes after 1,000 hours, but the stylus life as a whole is expected to top 2,000 hours. Proper care is comprised of the following: • Cleaning of record by means of fibre brush before and after every use. Cleaning of record by using record cleaning machine once in a while. • Cleaning of stylus by means of a fine antistatic brush. Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record. Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge towards the stylus tip, never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side. • Proper adjustment of alignment, antiskating, azimuth and tracking force. • Ortofon do not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus. |
Ortofon 2M series styli interchangeabilityPhysically 2M styli will fit on alternative 2M cartridges bodies, but 2M Series cartridges’ engines, coils and magnets configurations are not quite identical: Red and Blue are identical, so are the Bronze and Black and so are the true mono variants 2M Mono and 2M 78 |
History of the 2M SeriesThe 2M Series was developed in conjunction with the Danish designer Moeller Jensen Design. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record’s surface, the 2M’s handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality. Of course, the 2M isn’t just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with Ortofon’s unrelenting commitment to providing the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without coloration. The name “2M” was chosen as it represents the abbreviation for moving magnet, MM. The four-model 2M line was originally introduced in 2008, and since then the range has been extended to include True-mono models 2M MONO and 78. Also available are models with expanded mounting options, such as Verso for bottom mount headshells and PnP for direct mounting on arms with universal mount. |

in the beginning was the sound trackOn the 9th of October 1918, the two Danish engineers, Axel Petersen (1887-1971) and Arnold Poulsen (1889-1952) founded the Electrical Phono Film Company with a few capable and foresighted businessmen who would support the organization financially. Their aim was to explore the possibility of high-class recording and developing one of the first synchronized sound film systems in the world. Under primitive conditions, the two Danish engineers and their small staff had to solve a number of what were considered insuperable problems. |
Advancements in SoundThe differences among the 2M variants concern three primary areas: engine, body material and stylus profile. The entire 2M Series features Ortofon’s split pole pins, an invention which enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response as with a moving coil cartridge. Split pole pins were invented by Ortofon and were originally presented in the 500 and Ortofon OM Super Series. The 2M 78, 2M Mono, 2M Red and 2M Blue use an improved engine, which provides an optimized sound reproduction and a high level of sonic accuracy. The 2M Bronze and 2M Black use a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver-plated copper wire. The cartridge body material used for the 2M Bronze and 2M Black is manufactured from Lexan DMX Piano Black, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances. |

Received package within 3 days. This is the needle for my pro-ject turn table, so I was worried about getting it damaged in shipping.. but the box in which needle is packed was really good and safe..ortofon 2m needle is really great. The sound it produce is very clean and crisp..The advantage is that when we break the needle we don’t have to take it to repair shop to fix it.. it’s very simple to replace this needle..I can rate the build quality as 5 on 5.The sound quality is 4 on 5 .. just because I have heard better sounding needles. But sound is very subjective..Over all it’s a great needle.

I went back to Red after spending the past year and a half with Ortofon’s Blue cartridge/stylus. Not totally a matter of choice — the price difference was the decider. Plus, I wanted to see if I could tell a difference in sonics worth the bucks, since the Blue costs more than double the Red.I was able to simply switch out the stylus, since the 2m cartridge works with both. Nice. After the break-in period, I came to the conclusion that the Blue delivered a better, more life-like experience, especially with the highs. I listen to a lot of Miles Davis. It matters. But the Red is a fine entry-level audiophile product, at an excellent price. I first went with Ortofon about three years ago at the urging of an audio guru who heard me griping about the sound from my Music Hall USB1 turntable. He was right. The upgraded sonics provided by replacing the factory-provided cartridge with the Red were dramatic and indisputable. Then it got even better with Blue. You can’t go

My setup includes:Pro-Ject Debut DC TurntablePro-Ject Phono Box MM preampYaoin Tube AmplifierPioneer BS21 Bookshelf SpeakersI purchased this stylus to replace the old Ortofon 2M Red that came with my Pro-Ject DC turntable. The first stylus lasted almost 3 years of hard use before I started to notice a decline in sound quality. Even then, the stylus sounded as good as a lower end stylus and would have lasted much longer if I didn’t know how great it sounded new. This stylus gives high end results without breaking the bank and has incredible durability. I highly recommend!

Used the red for awhile, night and day difference from stock cartridge. Upgraded to blue, even better but you need trained ears to hear a difference. If you have a stock cartridge thats lacking, the red will give you a huge imorovement

This was exactly what I needed to replace the needle that got used up. Simple Ortofon styling where all I had to do was slide off the old and slide on the new. Since this was exactly like the previous cartridge, there were no adjustments that needed to be made. When I tested the needle, the sound from my vinyl was awesome!!! Highly recommend!!!! A+++

I love my ortofon red yes there are better performing cartridges and styli available but ortofon has a particular sound that many of us find pleasing I am one of those that enjoys the subtle quarks and moments of audio bliss this cartridge and styli can reproduce under the right circumstances for the money I am more than happy with the reds performance just take the time to set up your cart according to your turntable specifications and you should be a happy audio camper

I use this brand/model for my turntable. If there is a better turntable cartriddge in this price range than the Ortofon Red, I would like to know about it, but I’m not aware of it.

The sound of this cartridge is well known, but I want to talk about something else: how easy it is to change the stylus. All the fittings are by friction. The old stylus comes off easily if you squeeze and pull in the intuitive direction. Keep the old one around to figure out the orientation of the new one, unless you have a fine topological mind. Once you have the right direction the new stylus slips on easily. Now the good part: there’s a stylus cover which also comes off with a little pull in a direction completely different than the direction of mounting the stylus itself. In other words, when you pull off the cover, you can NOT mess up the orientation of the stylus. Thank you Ortofon!

This stylus was bundled with my Technics 1500 C turntable. I’m no turntable expert but can say as a veteran producer and musician that the sound is great from this stylus. Would purchase again.
