This the third one of these M-Audio EXP expression pedals that I have bought and I find them to be reasonably sturdy and durable, but more over – value for money.I bought 2 originally, to use with my Line 6 Helix, and recently added a third to work with my Arturia Keylab 61. There is a company named Mission who make expression pedals designed specifically to work with the Helix, but they are outrageously priced items, especially when you consider it is essentially a variable potentiometer in a box with a treadle. As my equipment is studio based, these M-Audio pedals have not been subjected to the rigours of the road and gigging, but in general use they do the job that they are supposed to do. Anyhow, at the price they are, should one be damaged it an inexpensive item to replace.Essentially you could buy a dozen of these for considerably less than the price of a single Mission pedal.

The M-Audio EX-P is made of ABS with a steel base and steel fulcrum bolt. It’s provided with a fixed 2m cable ending in the usual TRS (Tip/Ring/Sleeve) plug. A switch under the unit swaps the tip and ring connections depending on how you plan to use the unit. There’s also a “Trim” knob that can be used to set minimum volume when using it as a volume control with an M-Audio keyboard.I bought this to use as a second expression pedal with my Line 6 M9 multi-effect unit alongside the Nektar expression pedal that I bought about a month earlier. The Nektar is also made of ABS but is more expensive, feels a little more solid and is a little narrower, taking up less space on the pedalboard. They share a minor problem which is that there is a resistor in line with the cable that prevents the Line 6 from seeing a full range of values but this is not a problem for me.

Pros: Simple to use. I designed a midi controller for arduino and was easy to integrate into my project. Reliable for the most part (more on that later). Just requires quarter inch cable. I loke that there’s a switch to change midi value type, as well adjustment knob.Cons: Construction is plastic(y). The resistance when moving the pedal is nonexistent, very light. The biggest problem is when the dial is rolled back to change resistance, and the pedal pitched all the way back, i can rarely get it to go to zero (think of a controller deadzone). This tells me the resistor used on the dial isn’t very accurate as zero position hovers between 3 and 5 (in midi). It takes me pitching forward then back multiple times for it to zero.Otherwise it’s fine for the money. I can modify my arduino code to make hitting zero easier but for people using this on professional equipment, i hope you can adjust that on device.

This pedal is plastic but nicely built and not flimsy or delicate. I use it for my stomp boxes that can use expression pedals and on my keyboard. It works for all of my needs. It’s versatile and can be use for many different applications. The volume/saturation knob on the side is a great feature to dial in the parameters of different needs. Recommended!

The M-Audio EX-P is well-built, and performs great with my BOSS Katana. My only issue with it is that the cable is hardwired into the unit. But if the cable ever goes bad, I supposed it would be about the same cost to replace the whole pedal as it would be to buy a new, quality cable. Having said that, when I start gigging again I will probably buy another M-Audio EX-P to have on hand as a back-up.

I’ve been struggling with finding a good expression pedal for my Helix. Line 6 products don’t use a TRS connector, so the ring contact of a TRS plug will get grounded and, depending upon the pedal is wired, will cause really odd behaviors (like reading 100% when the pedal is near the middle, but 0% when _either_ toe or heel is all the way down) or just non-linear expressions (like the Helix reading 50% when the pedal is only 30% rocked forward and reading 75% when the pedal is at its midpoint). If you google a bit, you’ll find forums and diagrams describing how to resolder various expression pedals to make them work with the Helix. I didn’t want to do that to my nice Roland EV-5, so I looked for something cheaper. I tried the On-stage KEP100, first, but that has a 100K potentiometer, which is too much for the Helix. So, I ordered a couple of the M-Audios (because I read they had 10K pots, like the Helix likes) fully expecting to have to rewrite them with T

It’s plastic, but fairly heavy plastic, so if used reasonably, it should last for years. No need to spend over $100 for a ‘beefier’ version. This does the trick.

This product works well, and you can adjust the sensitivity!

Overall I’m very impressed of the quality of the foot pedal. Felt very solid. I wish it worked with my Modx6 features. Volume worked ok but could not get it to control my super knob. If you have a regular keyboard, I would highly recommend it.

Works flawlessly with the Novation Impulse midi keyboard and the trim knob very useful in setting the expression range
