KNIPEX 86 03 180 SBA Pliers Wrench
Self-ratcheting action (view larger).
A one-of-a-kind tool with unlimited possibilities, the patented, easy-to-use Knipex pliers wrench is a fantastic tool for fastening, gripping, holding, and bending. Its slim profile allows easy access to confined spaces, making it one of the most versatile tools in your toolbox. This model (86 03 180) has a 7-1/4-inch length and a 1-3/8-inch opening capacity. It features a time-saving push button adjustment with 13 adjustment settings and infinite positions for quickly locking onto a variety of workpieces. Its parallel smooth jaws avoid damaging soft or plated materials and provide even, full-contact gripping of a wide range of sizes. It’s a great tool for tightening locknuts, exerting pressure to activate the adhesive power of contact adhesives, edge breaking in tile work, snapping cable ties, and utilization as a small vice.
Unlike an open-end wrench with uneven compression that can cause surface damage, this Knipex pliers wrench offers zero backlash under pressure. With a 10-to-1 lever ratio, the cam action design ensures a strong, secure grip without hand or wrist strain. The self-ratcheting action allows for fast, easy operation while eliminating the need for additional tools. The Knipex pliers wrench is available in a number of grips and sizes for a variety of applications.
Excellent for gripping, holding, pressing, and bending applications (view larger).
Sometimes we give our pliers a really hard time. We try to destroy them to find out what makes them good and long-lasting. Because we don’t want to leave anything to chance, we take a long, careful look.
The steel Knipex uses is precisely hardened with a maximum of 0.8 percent carbon and defined parts of chromium and vanadium, guaranteeing optimum cutting performance and service life — even though it requires special production and costs a bit more. But our high product demands require this.
The rivet of our high-leverage diagonal cutter also has to stand up to a lot of stress. That’s why we literally give it backup: we forge it straight onto the pliers. This means extra effort as we have to precision mill the rivet to a few hundredth millimeters. But satisfied users are worth this effort.
Knipex also looks closely at the small details. The angles, the sharpness, the hardness, the toughness of the cutting edges. The precision and smooth movement of the joint. The handle design and the finish. We keep reviewing these subjects, we research, we test, and we improve our pliers.
Headquartered in Wuppertal, Germany, Knipex is an independently-owned family enterprise steeped in tradition and specializing in the manufacturing of high-quality pliers. It all started back in 1882 when C. Gustav Putsch set up his own forge shop in Cronenberg (now a suburb of Wuppertal), and the company is now run by a fourth generation of that family. The world’s leading brand in pliers today, Knipex is focused on the performance, service life, and ergonomics of its tools in order to meet the high expectations of professional users.

The pliers wrench is excellent for gripping, holding, pressing and bending work pieces. The high lever ratio, parallel jaws without profile and infinitely variable adjustment guarantee a secure and smooth gripping of the work piece free from backlash. . Zero backlash jaw surface pressure prevents damage to edges of sensitive components. Fast adjustment directly on the work piece by pushing a button. The action of the jaws allows screwed connections to be tightened and released quickly using a ratchet principle. Lever transmission is greater than 10 – 1 for strong gripping power. Can also be used for tile breaking.

The media could not be loaded. I am a senior mechanical engineer at a manufacturer of electronic monitoring equipment. We were installing a heavy measuring instrument and needed to level it by adjusting some 26 mm nuts. We could find no fixed open-end wrench in 26 mm so we tried a Knipex 8603250 (ten-inch, chrome, straight).I was amazed at how handy—how wonderful—this tool is so I bought one of my own.To avoid damaging the apexes on hex fasteners, one must adjust the jaws on a normal adjustable wrench as tight as possible, but doing so results in greater difficulty pulling the wrench off a fastener after advancing it a flat or two. The Knipex, on the other hand, acts as a clever combination of slip-jaw pipe wrench and pliers where you clamp *perfectly* tight on the flats (with more than enough mechanical advantage to achieve very high torques) and have a plier-like action for fast flat-to-flat cycling while tightening. So there’s 168 words; the video will save a thousand more.

The packaging came in from an obvious home-seller, which made me even happier with this purchase. Supporting the smaller folks in any way always feels better. The quality of Knipex are overwhelmingly better than what I’m used to. These wrench pliers are firm and well made with a nice, non-marring flat surface for pipes, and a tight fit for any nuts I’ve needed to break loose and tighten. What a tool!I’m very satisfied.

I’ve bought a few of these both for work and as gifts and been delighted to use them very regularly. They’re a high quality tool and very handy. I don’t touch my ratchet set much anymore.

This tool works great. The pliers/wrench action works as expected, but the overall length is just too long. I bought the 7.25″ version (part number 86 03 180). I made sure the seller was Amazon and not some sketchy third party seller. As you can see in the picture, Amazon’s barcode says 86 03 180, but Knipex’s packaging says 86 03 300 (the 300mm 12″ version). I explained this to three different reps, but they just didn’t understand. Be warned.

Parallel smooth jaws with a 15:1 mechanical advantage. NOT your conventional pliers.

These won’t slip or spread just because they’re pliers. I doubted that aspect, but after getting the smaller pair I was sold. As a pro mechanic, I wouldn’t steer you wrong. What I love about these is that adjustable wrenches lock on after turning under force. These don’t. I use them on fluid fittings and hardly ever use my 16″ adjustables anymore. Knipex makes the best pliers, period. Cutters, cobras, etc.
