KNIPEX 12 62 180 SB Automatic Wire Stripper 10-24 AWG
The Knipex 12 62 180 is a good choice if you occasionally need to strip cable, e.g. when instaling lighting, during model making, work on a camper van or when instaling new sockets. It greatly reduces strain, both for DIY enthusiasts and for professional users. Firstly, there is no need to adjust to different cable cross-sections because the pliers do this automatically. Secondly, thanks to the slim head shape, it is also possible to strip the wire in poorly accessible areas, such as in junction boxes. It has a wire cutter for shortening cables and cutting Cu and Al conductors up to 2.5 mm², so users need one less tool.
The cable to be stripped is inserted in the pliers from the front and pushed up to the individually adjustable length stop. After this, the user only needs to press the handle. The wire stripping process takes place automatically. The insulation is only cut as deeply as needed for removal of the insulation layer.
Anyone looking for a convenient substitute for simple manual standard wire strippers or for the makeshift wire stripping diagonal cutters famous in electrician circles is well-served by the Knipex 12 62 180 automatic wire strippers. There is no need to adapt manual force to the insulation thickness or strip the insulation by hand.
Knipex has a wide range of special products for the electronics and electrical industries. During wire stripping, wire strippers from Knipex protect the conductor in the cable and offer utmost comfort for the user. The great benefits of the tools and safe, comfortable use in everyday work are the results of decades of experience building tools, constant product development and the commitment by Knipex towards high quality standards. Pliers from Knipex are built for many years of use in a professional environment.

Like many reviews here, I thought that these would be up to the typical Knipex standard. Unfortunately, they are not even close. I think they cut corners and made plastic parts that should have been metal. If the cutting blades were sturdier (they flex when pulling the insulation back) these would be great. They do feel great in your hand and are very light.

It has good action. It ejects the insulation piece nicely. The depth guage doesn’t go short enough or D-SUB type connector pins and sockets. The smallest wire it says it will cut (24 ga) it doesn’t cut, only a small nick, then you have to do the rest manually. I expected better from KNIPEX.

Works good on 12 gage and smaller wires. Not meant for large wires.

I don’t know if this will do PTFE silver stranded wire but I used this to rig up a bunch of automotive wiring and was well worth the purchase

Works perfect on those small thin wires. I think it could have been made out of more metal than what it was made but the upgrade of allowing you to select the force of the teeth and the insulation is much better than the 1st version. Exactly what you expect from KNIPEX Tools. Would like to see the make a version that would do multiple wires at the same time.

When installing a whole house fan I had wires to strip in confined spaces with short pigtails. The connectors I used required 11mm of insulation removed and this stripper worked perfectly with 12 and 14 gauge house wire (THHN) as well as some 24 gauge vinyl covered control wire. The adjustment slider noted in the second picture increases gripping force when moved forward to the left. Usually I leave it fully to the right, but some of the very small wires requires more grip.Today I tried Tefzel wire used in aircraft which is notoriously difficult to strip. I have a collection of expensive blade strippers as well as thermal strippers for this. They are fiddly. The blade type require careful placement of the wire in the right size cutting hole. The thermal strippers requires careful timing of the heat and produce acrid fumes. The Knipex did 16 gauge Tefzel with its standard setting but did require the adjustment slider to the moved forward a bit for a clean strip o

I started stripping wires with scissors before I had nice tools. You’ve probably done something similar, where you carefully go around the insulation with a sharp blade of sorts until it’s cut through, then pull off the insulation. It’s fine for a couple wires here and there, but when you need to do 100’s of wires, it isn’t time efficient.I bought a set of automatic wire strippers from a blue and yellow brand that have served me well for years. Cheap and effective. However, there are a lot of situations where those just don’t fit due to their design. Think recessed areas or tight to reach holes. That’s where these come in to play. These Knipex wire strippers are like their other products – good high quality materials (albeit plastic body, but it’s holding up well) and very functional. I got these over the other model Knipex sells as this has a tension adjustment on it. It’s not the most useful, but it adds a bit of control that the other pair may not, especially

I am an Electro-Mechanical (field service) Engineer and I work with robotics and lots of different CNC machines almost on a weekly basis doing installations/retrofits all over the Americas, so I travel a lot. My first job doing that was with a German Company and they had something similar so I’ve learnt how good these type are and thats why I’ve ordered these. Those saying that “it looks and feels flimsy” definetly have no idea of what they have on their hands and how great of a product it is for somebody that’s an actual proffesional using it.If you work maintenance, wiring panels, robotics, machine tools, heck, even wiring vehicles of any type or anything that uses mostly stranded wires, THIS IS IT. It will save you a LOT of time and headaches. I can honestly say that if you are wiring panels with one of those sold at home depot, one of these will not only save you a lot of hassle, pulling and cursing, but it will save you lots of time. How much? Saved me about 6 to 9 hours on a week of work (with an average of 11 to 12 hours of work per day) which got me to finish the “impossible job” on time. Settings: I’ve got mine set to the hardest pull and a decent “universal size” of stripping. You can forget about the pull strenght, I have no idea what the other reviews are talking about when they mention that it breaks small wires (I deal almost daily with 12 thru 24 gage and zero problem using the same (max) strenght), the lenght can be easily adjusted but is just easier to leave it where is at (for what I consider an universal good lenght) and if you need the peel smaller, then just do it “by eye” (just look at it, put it where you want it, pull and done, no need to be “adjusting anything). I’ve had this pair for a few months now, they have probably cut and peeled at least 2 to 3 thousand wires and they still work as when I’ve got them. Worth spending 50$ on it? If you are a pro, it will feel like a steal. If you have a hobby, you will love this. If you want to wire a couple of speakers and thats it, you might be over your head getting this and it will probably take you longer to understand how (easy) it works than doing it with a blade.
