A truly iconic object and symbol not only of Philippe Starck but of Alessi itself, this citrus squeezer – as revolutionary as it is surprisingly functional – was sketched in its essentials by Starck during a holiday by the sea in Italy, on a pizzeria napkin.
Founded in 1921 as a ‘Workshop for the processing of brass and nickel silver sheet metal, with foundry’, Alessi has always stood out for the high quality of its products. In almost a century of history, the company has gradually evolved to become one of the leading ‘Factories of Italian design’, capable of applying its expertise and excellence in design management to many different product types. Open to change and international development, Alessi at the same time has a strong bond with the traditions and cultural background of its area and continues to be synonymous with handcrafted objects produced with the help of machines.
Alessi’s mission is to translate its quest for the most advanced cultural, aesthetic, design and functional quality into industrial production. Designer products are the result of the constant reconciliation of art and industry, of the ‘Immensity of Creative Potential’ and the needs of the market. The company is committed to work constantly onto a boundary line, in balance between the most advanced expressions of the international creativity and the desires of the general public. Alessi has been described as a ‘Dream Factory’, which uses its products to make people’s dreams come true, providing them with the Art and Poetry that they seek.

I’ve had my eye on this object for a while and always admired the beautiful form. I had been under the impression that it also had very good function as a juicer, so I thought I was take the plunge and buy one to replace the simple and conventional glass juicer we already owned. The form is indeed beautiful when you open the box, but the function is pretty poor. First, if you read the instructions inside the box, it makes clear this is only designed as a lemon squeezer. Don’t call it a “citrus squeezer” on the website and box exterior if you can’t use it for oranges and grapefruit. And, believe me you can’t. You’ll get almost as much juice on the wall and counter as you do in the glass since the juice will spray in every direction. Even when I very delicately spent a minute or so carefully squeezing a lemon half into a mug, there was a fair amount of lemon juice sprayed on the counter. This never happens with the simple glass manual squeezer we’ve had for years. In short, if you want something that looks nice on your counter but barely works, this is the juicer for you. If you squeeze oranges and grapefruits with any regularity for a glass of juice, don’t waste your time.

While this is a great juicer, I like it more as a conversation piece. It looks like a UFO has just landed on my kitchen counter. I bought it over the holidays (Merry Christmas to me) and everyone who has come to my house since has asked about it. It’s beautiful in its simplicity and clean lines. Love the history of how this little juicer came to be. Expensive (really expensive), but worth it. If you must know about the function….just place a wee dish under the pointy piece, use the top like a reamer and the juice just slides down and into the dish. Strain before using to get out the pips and pulp. Easy peasy.

It is a beautiful piece for decoration and it does the job. It is not very practical to make juices, and I would still use and electric of mechanical juicer, but this makes the kitchen seem more minimalist and nice. It fits a cup under, but not a very large one. It is a bit tough to clean but it’s not something to use very often, maybe just as a party trick or a cool decor.

Giving the product 4 stars instead of 5 because the non-slip rubber foot pads were not glued to the product and fell off within a day. This is a design flaw that could have easily been fixed.

it is a central design pop of my home bar. Guests always mention it. As a reamer it’s okay, as a designed object whose purpose only becomes apparent when it is seen in action- it is art.

This little gem is great! The pointy bottom aims all your juice into your cocktail shaker, add ice and booze and your night cap is ready!!!
