Description

Hive: The Pillbug is a new pair of tiles that can be added to Hive. The pillbug moves like the queen bee – one space at a time – but it also has a special ability that it may use instead of moving. This ability allows the pillbug to move an adjacent unstacked piece (whether friendly or enemy) two spaces: up onto the pillbug itself, then down into an empty space adjacent to itself. Some exceptions for this ability:  The Pillbug may not move the piece most recently moved by the opponent.  The Pillbug may not move any piece in a stack of pieces.  The Pillbug may not move a piece if it splits the hive (violating the One Hive Rule).  The Pillbug may not move a piece through a too-narrow gap of stacked pieces (violating the Freedom to Move Rule).  Any piece which physically moved (directly or by the pillbug) is rendered immobile on the next player’s turn; it cannot move or be moved, nor use its special ability. The mosquito can mimic either the movement or special ability of the pillbug, even when the pillbug it is touching has been rendered immobile by another pillbug.

The Pill-Bug is essentially a piece that can chuck another piece from one section connecting it to another open section connecting it. The main drawbacks with this piece are 1) it’s rather slow, and 2) it can only transfer pieces on ground level. However, depending on hive and piece placements, the Pill-Bug can be a useful for deflecting opponent pieces or moving one’s own pieces for realignment.Unless one has means of using both sizes or giving away one set size of pieces, I find it awkward to buy this expansion only for one size and not be able to use both sets of pieces. (I have only the Pocket version of Hive and must find a way to rid the bigger sized pieces.) My best solution, though not flawless, would be to include the Pill-Bug in later editions of Hive and charge a few more bucks per copy.

Hive has become my favorite new game (Even though it’s been out for years, I just discovered it). I like that the Gen42 has added expansion pieces to an already great game to add new elements of depth. The Pillbug is pretty cool in that it has the ability to move an adjacent piece (yourself or your opponent) two spaces: up onto itself and then down into another empty space adjacent to itself. There are restrictions, however, which makes understanding how to use it less intuitive in gameplay and less user-friendly to commit to memory than other pieces:1. cannot move a piece that was just moved by another player in their previous turn2. cannot move a stack of pieces3. cannot move a piece that splits the hive (violating the 1 hive rule)4. cannot move a piece through a narrow gap of stacked pieces (violating the Freedom to Move rule)5. a piece moved by the Pillbug may not move again on the next turnTruthfully, I often forget I have one in my options/gameplay, and wh

I love Hive and expansions are cool to have. You definitely don’t need this to enjoy Hive but if you play and enjoy the game they are nice to have. The pillbugs’ movements are a little bit more complex than the other bugs but that doesn’t detract from them too much. Sometimes we play with them and sometimes leave them out.The price is ridiculous, in my opinion, for such a small item.

The pillbug is a defensive piece which allows you to move other pieces using its special ability. This even includes the possibility of “rescuing” your queen bee when it is almost surrounded. In my opinion it adds a ton of strategy to the game, and heavily reduces the snowball effect that some Hive games have. This piece is the same high quality as the base game pieces. The design and paint is flawless. At $10 it’s a bit pricy for 2 tiles, but you can have a complete Hive set for under $50 (game plus all 3 expansions) so I didn’t think the price was too big of a deal.

Same material and quality as the original Hive pieces. The new moves of the expansion pieces keep the game interesting. Make sure you don’t buy the travel size pieces unless you have the travel size game. Kind of expensive, but I felt the added complexity it added to the game was worth the price.

The pillbug expansion is a great addition once you have learned the base game. It makes you think a little more than what you already had to do before and allows you to escape sometimes if your opponent does not understand its power!

It makes the game last a little longer, which is a plus for us.

No regrets buying, except for the high price for two pieces. But we do like the game, and having additional bugs is even more fun.

This has a special ability that makes it the most powerful defensive piece in the hive. Brilliant concept for a pillbug!Well-made. Same high quality and feel as orig pieces.
