Great single layer folding knife with high quality Alox scales. This one only has a single blade however this makes it far more portable than a typical multi-bladed swiss army knife. The attached photo shows the comparison of my Victorinox Swiss Army 1 against my Victorinox Hiker which is a 3 layer knife. As you can see the difference in overall thickness is massive as you would expect meaning the Swiss Army 1 (weight 46g) sits in a pocket very comfortably compared to the relatively bulky Hiker (weight 76g). Also note the difference in the thickness of the main knife blade with the Swiss Army 1 being substantially thicker and more sturdy. I own 5 Victorinox Swiss Army knives and this is my new favourite and is the one I now carry with me day to day due to its portability and sturdiness.

There are plenty of good reviews here. I’ll focus mine on the single stack SAK 1 model here, vs the 2-3 stack models. I’ve owned the 2&3 stack. This is my first single. Big fan of Alox SAK line. I like this knife a lot.I’ll start by saying I like the 2 layer electrician best, but I lost it. Ive been carrying a 3 layer Pioneer X which is a fantastic multi tool. This is the larger knife in the pictures. It feels like a brick in your pocket compared to the single layer.The beauty of this knife is that it disappears in you pocket. It’s worth buying just for that. It also will not freak out someone who does not carry a knife because it’s hardly tactical and kinda “pretty”.You can’t feel it at all. It’s really (almost too) thin. To me the 2 layer feels best in hand for use. This single layer is for light duty cutting. It does not have a grip to press hard. I used to put out (a lot) of pine straw and it did an excellent job. I’ve bought a couple of these knifes. Good quality part for the money. I like the utility and size of the knife for every-day common use and the product is well made in my view. I bought more than one, so if I like a pocket knife I generally obtain a couple to add to the pile.

Was easy to take along in a back pocket for my forest walk the other day when I used it to cut back brambles that were starting to block the paths and it was very effective for it’s small size, slicing through the brambles like a mini machete or samurai sword lol and that was straight from the box sharp.I think it would be even better if it had the combo tool like the smaller bantam Alox. Who knows why they don’t make such a model in this size as surely it would be a huge seller.Nevertheless this Army 1 is a really nice simple retro style compact and sturdy knife for when you don’t always need all of the multitools & if you do, then a Spartan is a similar size/weight though a bit more bulky wide and not so sturdy. I also have an Electrician and Farmer but they are heavier as well as bulkier. I have quite few others as can happen when you start to buy these SAKs but there is something about this Army 1 that makes it one of my favourites.

This knife would be perfect if it were a bit easier to open the blade. The combination of the tiny and slippery nail nick with a really stiff leaf spring safety makes opening this knife a bit too uncomfortable. Your choices are to use your nail to open the blade which is a bit uncomfortable tugging on your nail with so much pressure or the other choice is to just use two fingers to pinch the blade and pull it out but the blade is quite slippery and difficult to get a good grip on. I ended up cutting my finger while trying to open this knife which then convinced me to return it. Perhaps the knife I got just had an overly stiff leaf spring or was riveted down too tight or something. I would buy this knife again if it had a small thumb stud or a spyderco like hole in the blade to give it better grip to open, or even if it had a softer leaf spring so there wasn’t so much resistance to overcome when trying to deploy the blade fully. But yeah everything else about this

This is a great size of knife, the single blade makes it super compact, it just disappears in your pocket yet still opens up to a very useful size. A perfect “food knife”.

This is a beautiful knife for the price. Very solid, nice snap, really a high-quality knife. Note, though, that this is longer and thicker than the inox version of the Victorinox Bantam, which includes a blade and combo tool. There’s something attractive about the simplicity of just having a single blade, but the Bantam is a better choice if you want a Victorinox that is classy, light, and uncomplicated.What I really wish Victorinox would do would be to release a one-blade version of the Excelsior (with NO KEY RING, which is totally out of place on that knife). They used to make one (often with a Cub Scout logo, sometimes called the Sentry), but it hasn’t been available in the US for some time.
